About a Boy is my favorite kind of movie. It’s about broken people finding each other and discovering that they work best when they are all put together.
Will Freeman (Hugh Grant) is a 38 year old Londoner who lives a charmed life and is only concerned with his own happiness – which he believes comes from dating a string of different women while remaining uncommitted to any of them. Through an outlandish ploy to find single mothers to date, Will encounters 12- year old Marcus Brewer (Nicholas Hoult) who lives a very challenging life of being bullied at school and living with his chronically depressed single mother (Toni Collette). Marcus attaches himself to Will, and much to Will’s chagrin, Will begins to enjoy Marcus’s company. Will ends up helping Marcus with his issues at school and home and Marcus helps Will understand the value of relationships.
Although the movie is somewhat predictable in that it is a feel-good movie with a happy ending, it did not turn out the way I thought it was going to. It is a somewhat unconventional ending and way better than I would have predicted. It’s the kind of movie that shows you that family is not just defined by those you are related to. Sometimes a puzzle has many more pieces to it than you realize but they are all needed to make it whole. I highly recommend this one when you need a little pick me up.
